Technique Tuesday - Textured Backgrounds

Since I posted a piece with a textured background yesterday, this textured background post by Cyndi from Layers Upon Layers caught my eye. She has a detailed how to for several different backgrounds. One uses foil, one uses masking tape and the other uses cardboard.
I also wanted to remind you of the textured background […]

Originally uploaded by StampingMad

Over at Mixed Media Monday, the challenge is to make a piece with texture. I used a really thick coat of acrylic paint over sequin waste to make my textured background. The bird is liquid watercolor and a bit of metallic golden […]

My New Puppy…

I got a new puppy. Actually, I got a new puppy twice, because my mom bought the first one’s sister and she got pneumonia before my mom could bring her home. Since she really wanted a Cairn Terrier, I agreed to swap for a Scottie puppy she found two days later. I couldn’t have done […]

Friday Challenge - The Sea

Today’s challenge is to make a piece of art, an ATC, a greeting card, etc. that reminds you of the sea. Here’s the background that inspired the challenge. It is actually very shimmery in person, but the scanner never picks up stuff like that. If you participate in the challenge, please leave a comment with […]

Thursday Thought - More on Originality

Clement Greenberg says, “All profoundly original work looks ugly at first.”
Thinking back to the very first time I saw different techniques and styles, I have to say that he’s probably right. However, I don’t think we should try to make ugly things to be original. I’m positive that the artist didn’t think his or her […]

Wednesday Spotlight - Studio 432

Today, I’m spotlighting my local art studio, Studio 432, in Perryville, Maryland. It finally has a website! You can see some of the great stuff for sale there, like Phil Johnston’s utterly cool silverware sculptures. I couldn’t resist his frog piece.
There are also arts and crafts classes coming up this Spring, so keep an […]

The Lifestyle Channel Is Filled With Love

In celebration of the upcoming holiday, the b5media Lifestyles Channel participated in their own little carnival, hearts and flowers, hugs and kisses…
Because of nasty weather and the horrible flu bug going around and the recent server outage, some of the channel wasn’t able to participate. But when it comes to something like Valentine’s Day, […]

Artful Monday - Fly

I had a few wood scraps and decided to recycle them into canvases for mixed media pieces. This is one of them. I gessoed it first and let it dry, then painted the background. The FLY stamp is one of those cheap foam stamps. The butterfly was painted with liquid watercolors and the crackle effect […]

Gothic Arch Challenge - Valentine

I thought I was done with purple after last week, but then I got this gorgeous trim at Interior Alternatives this morning and had to make a purple Valentine arch for this week’s Gothic Arch challenge. (Interior Alternatives is an awesome fabric and trim warehouse store in Newark, Delaware.) The rose is cut out from […]

Friday Challenge - Step Out of the Box

Today’s challenge is to avoid square or rectangular shaped art. Round, triangular, an octagon shape… I thought it would be easier than it was, but it is really a challenge to create a piece of art with a different shape dictating the layout.
