Stamping Mad

Carve Your Own Rubberstamps

If I don’t have the right image, I’ll carve my own rubberstamp. It’s time consuming and words are tricky - you have to carve a mirror image of the word. Still, its worth it. “Blue Baby” is a get well soon card created with a stamp I made using a sketch of my nephew. The background is All Night Media’s musical note stamp.
To make rubberstamps the easy way, you’ll need:
* Carving medium (rubber erasers or a Speedy Cut Printmaking Block
* Carving tool (I prefer Speedball’s carving tool, but you can use an Exacto knife or even a sharp new cuticle cutter.)
* Patience

Draw the image you want to carve on the carving medium in pencil. Carve out all of the areas inside and outside the lines to create a raised image. For the first stamp, try something really simple so you can get the feel of it. I did the word “hi” because it was short and uncomplicated.
