This background is very simple and very easy to do. Dribble a few colors of paint on a sheet of cardstock and drag a piece of cardboard across the paper to spread the paint. This scan doesn’t show the shimmer or the translucent layers of the actual piece. I used metallic coller and silver and […]

If you’re anything like me, you have a big pile of scraps you can’t bear to throw away because you’re going to use them up someday. For me, someday has arrived. Here is a map scrap background I’ve put together, using up (drumroll, please) every one of the map scraps I had saved up. Now, […]

This is a fun way to use up some of those spray on dyes or color mist products you never got around to trying. You will need some old fashioned rick rack, a piece of cardstock or watercolor paper (glossy cardstock doesn’t work well-it smears too much) and some spray dye or color mist colors. […]

Of course, I couldn’t resist playing around with the Oil Pastel background technique once I saw how beautiful it was. Here are a few of the backgrounds I made today.

Ok, the secret to making this type of melted crayon background is a vegetable peeler. Seriously. Head for the kitchen drawer. You’ll also need crayons, waxed paper, an iron, a metallic ink pad and a canvas. Watercolor paper works fine, but I used an actual canvas for this one.
1. Shave your crayons right onto the […]

Did you see the beautiful image transfers made with gel medium that were posted on Layers Upon Layers this morning? I love to experiment with image transfer techniques to make backgrounds with a lot of depth.

This is a fun way to use up some of those broken crayons sitting around the house. Cut two heart shapes from waxed paper. Place one shape on a heat resistant surface that is easily cleaned. Sprinkle crayon shavings over it. Place the second heart on top, forming a sandwich. Heat your heart sandwich with […]
