Melinda Collins says, “Originality comes from just being true to ourselves and what we value about what we see.”
I think she has a great definition of originality here. How can you create a carbon copy of someone else’s art and be true to yourself?

I found some really interesting quotes on originality in art. I’m starting with George Edward Moore - “It does not matter how badly you paint, just so long as you don’t paint badly like other people.”
I don’t know if I agree completely. I think you need some skill as a painter. There are things I’ve […]

Willa Cather gives us quite a lot to think about with this one: “Art and religion (they are the same thing, in the end, of course) have given man the only happiness he has ever had.”
I suppose we could say that an artist is inspired by something bigger than himself and that religious beliefs quite […]

In contrast to last week’s artist definition, Eric Gill says, “Art is skill, that is the first meaning of the word.”
Skill definitely does go into art. That was my main objection to Von Schlegel’s definition of an artist - that he ignored skill as a part of what makes an artist. However, some of Van […]

Lady Bird Johnson said:
Art is the window to man’s soul. Without it, he would never be able to see beyond his immediate world; nor could the world see the man within.
So, the next time you make a piece of art, you are showing the world your soul. No pressure, folks. Seriously though, I think it […]

All art requires courage.
The next time you think you aren’t an artist and can’t make art, maybe you just need to gather a big dose of courage.

Leonardo da Vinci said:
Art is never finished, only abandoned.
Do you think this is true or do you come to a point where you know a piece is so perfectly finished that no more can be done to it?

I’m thinking about posting a quote by an artist on Thursdays, which is the day I always seem to need inspiration. I’d love to know if you find them helpful.
Creativity is allowing yourself to make mistakes. Art is knowing which ones to keep.
