Different Stamping Backgrounds

by Nikki Katz on May 20th, 2005

Backgrounds can make or break your card. It’s much more interesting to stamp the background than just to use a solid color paper. You can use the stamps to accentuate the theme of your card and give it depth and pizzazz.

Here are some different types of backgrounds you can create:

  • Background Stamps: Purchasing background stamps is probably the easiest method of all. You can find stamps with circles, hearts, plaid, canvas, jeans, paisley, stripes, shapes, and more.

  • Rubberband Background: Layer rubberbands at different angles and directions across the card (looping around to the back). Brayer on a color and then remove the rubberbands.
  • Night Sky Background: Add versamark or embossing ink to a toothbrush and then flick the toothbrush so that the ink spatters onto the cardstock . Sprinkled with embossing powder and emboss.
  • Bubble Background: Take a large shallow bowl and add detergent soap and water. Add a couple of drops of ink to the water. Using a straw, blow air into the mixture until bubbles form. Place your cardstock gently on top, lift it up and then place another piece of cardstock on top. Lift off and wipe off any excess bubbles, leaving a swirly image on both pages.
  • Bleach Background: Use household bleach and any type of product to make a background - toothpicks, q-tips, tissue paper, sponges, etc.
  • Brayer Background: Use the brayer to ink up a background with a solid color, multiple colors, or you can even draw on the brayer with a marker to stamp fun lines.
  • Household Items Background: Use any household items, dip them in ink, and make a fun background. Try using paper towels, tissue, q-tips, stones, paintbrushes, toothbrushes, and more.
  • Marble Background: Place a piece of cardstock in a shallow container. Ink up some marbles and then roll them around on the cardstock.
