Don’t Waste Your Paint - Recycled Newspaper Backgrounds
I lay down newspaper on my art table before I do any painting to protect the surface. Since I am not the neatest person with a brush, I tend to get a lot of paint on the newspaper. Rather than throw it away, I recycle it into an art background. Newspaper is just a bit stronger than tissue paper and really adds texture to the canvas. This one had bits of exotic papers stuck to it, because I’m also a bit messy with my gel medium, so there’s even more texture than usual. I stamped, rubbed in walnut ink and made a gel medium transfer as well. Then I added the little bird and the girl image.
I notice that I tend to take a lot of chances with newspaper backgrounds. It is very freeing to work on something that would have been tossed if I didn’t decide to recycle it, I guess.

This is really a neat idea, Katelyn. I’ll have to tell my daughter about it. That may be something to work into crafts for youngsters. We always spread out newspaper for them to paint, paste, or do other crafts on. Now we could incorporate it into a background for other art projects.

Using this idea for kids is really fun. I do it with my niece and nephew and they get so carried away that they start painting art directly on the paper instead.
