Stamping Mad

Getting Started With Stamps

by Nikki Katz on April 29th, 2005

There’s so much to love, and buy, when it comes to stamping. It’s hard to know where to start, so I’ve put together this handy worksheet that provides you with a great list to work off of. Print it out and take it to your favorite craft or hobby store, or buy some products from your favorite stamping demonstrator!

First Time Buyer Worksheet

STAMPS:

Pick two or more stamp sets that meet your immediate needs. You’ll usually want some occassion stamps (those that say Happy Birthday, Happy Anniversary, etc). Holiday stamps are great if you’re going to be doing a scrapbook page or stamping cards for a specific holiday. Background stampes are a fun method to add depth and dimension to your card or scrapbook page. An initial set of alphabet and phrase stamps are a must have! Alphabet stamps are fabulous for scrapbook pages because (unlike stickers) you’ll never run out of a particular letter!

PAPER:

You’ll definitely need white card stock for stamping crisp images. You’ll also want to choose a series of colors or a color family and buy assorted card stock. If you’ll be making cards you’ll want 8.5×11 paper to stamp on (each page can be cut in half horizontally and folded to make 2 cards). If you’re scrapbooking using 6×6 or 12×12 books, you’ll want to purchase the 12×12 paper.

You can also purchase patterned paper to give your pages some extra depth and color. Make sure to buy them to coordinate with your stamp pads and paper.

INK:

Black is a must have for standard stamping. You’ll also want to purchase ink pads in various colors to match the paper you purchased. Some companies (Stampin’ Up! and I’ve seen Target have them in the dollar section) sell stampin spots, which are 1 inch square ink pads. They usually come in a color familiy and it gives you a less expensive way to play around with the colors. Markers can be used to ink stamps and are a versatile way to color in your stamped images. Other ways to color in your stamped messages are to purchase watercolor pencils and a type of blender pen or brush.

ACCESSORIES:

Accessories are a great way to add that extra touch on your stamped cards and scrapbook pages. I recommend getting ribbon and/or cord, brads and/or eyelets, and buttons in the same color family as above.

TOOLS:

Scissors - If you are purchasing unmounted stamps, I highly recommend purchasing scissors that will cut through rubber.
Eyelet Kit - You’ll need the eyelet kit if you are purchasing eyelets.
Adhesive – You need to purchase an adhesive to glue all of your layers and adhesive together. Glue dots are incredible for attaching ribbon and other accessories. The SNAIL Adhesive or Glue Stick are best for adhering card stock.

ENVELOPES:

Don’t forget the envelopes if you’ll be stamping cards!!
