Preserving the Past at Studio 432

by Katelyn on April 23rd, 2008

Preserving the PastTonight was the Preserving the Past class at Studio 432. I want to tell someone how much fun I had and guess who’s been elected to listen? You, gentle reader. (I love the way older books call us gentle readers.)

I brought along some instant ancestors in case someone forgot to bring pictures, which was a good thing, because one person did need some. I went over packing tape transfers and was going to demonstrate gel medium transfers, but it has been four hours and the gel is still not dry enough. The room was kind of humid, so I guess that is why.

I showed my samples and then told them to dive in. (I didn’t take pictures of them yet and they’re still in the trunk. Maybe I’ll be able to get some photos up tomorrow. You can sort of see my one sample in the pictures here. It is the piece with the starry background.)

Preserving the Past 2I think between them they used some of everything, so it is a good thing I schlepped what felt like my entire studio down there! I had buttons, watch parts, aluminum gutter mesh (awesome to bend and glue down), old jewelry, charms, sheet music and a ton of other ephemera, lace, fibers, gel pens, rubber stamps, acrylic paint, packing tape for transfers, dominoes…you name it, I’m pretty sure I brought it.

The really cool thing was that the finished pieces were absolutely nothing like each other. Not one similarity. It was really great to see how people used the same supplies to make such different things.

Next Wednesday night, we’re doing Magnificent Monograms. I hope it is as fun as tonight’s class was. I feel like I should do one of those, “And now we return you to your regularly scheduled programming,” announcements because I’ve been doing giveaways and class reports instead of the traditional Artful Monday, etc. posts…
