Seek the Nest Beeswax Collage
This was my first try at using beeswax for collage. It was fun, but much harder than it looks. I began by painting a background and stamping the fleur de lis stamp all over it. I cut it in thirds because I was working on backgrounds for the skinny book swap at Altered Abbey. (As I began to put the collage together, my nephew held up a sheet of beeswax and asked what it was for. Of course, I couldn’t think about anything else but beeswax mixed media pieces after that, so I now have my first beeswax piece and am one behind on the skinny book swap.)
I then melted the wax in a bowl over a candle warming plate - I gave it a few blasts with my heat gun to help it along. I dipped each piece in beeswax and pressed it onto the background. I had to retry several times before I got pieces to stick and some of them were too heavily coated, so I used the heat gun to remelt thick wax and blow it away from the images. This wax was blue and I was afraid it would be too dark, but the pale blue wash makes a very pretty effect. Now if only I can figure out how to get the wax applied more evenly…
