Step 3 in Stamping a Card - The Size and Layout
This series is devoted to the steps necessary to stamp a card.
Step 3: The Size and Layout
You’ve got your stamps, paper, and ink all together at your work table. Now you need to determine the size of the card and the layout. Traditionally cards are made by cutting an 8.5 x 11 inch sheet of paper width-wise so that there are now two 8.5 x 5.5 sheets of cardstock. These pages are now folded in half to create a cardfront and interior that are 4.25 x 5.5 inches.
Once you have scored the card, folding it in half, you can choose to stamp the card vertically or horizontally. Ultimately this will depend on how you choose to layout your stamps and layers. Either choice is fine and it is a decision based on your personal preference. I alternate between the two options.
I cut my paper and decide my layout before I start stamping and accesorizing. I then stamp before I start gluing my layers together. This way, if I mess up on the stamp or coloring, I can just redo it on the back side or another piece of cardstock. If I had glued it all together, I would be forced to keep the bad stamped image, or start over with a new card.
I usually choose to have each stamped image framed by a border (solid or patterned paper). I then glue those on to the base cardstock, or a secondary layer that is slightly smaller than the front of the card. If I’m using a background stamp - that will go on the frames and/or the base cardstock. When I use word and phrase stamps, I will sometimes put those on the base cardstock instead of framing them, depending on how significant they are to the message.
Another layout, although not as traditional, is a 6 x 6 card that does not open. It is actually a scrapbook layout and can be used to send out holiday cards with family photos, or other messages to showcase pictures. The same steps apply in determining your stamp placement ahead of time.
