Technique Tuesday - Spatter Background

by Katelyn on April 15th, 2008

Sometimes, ideas for projects come from the oddest places. Here is where this Tuesday’s technique came from:
spatter paint
To make a spatter paint background, you’ll need an area where you can be messy. I used a big cardboard box base to protect things, but a gust of wind still blew paint back on the steps. You’ll also need a canvas or watercolor paper and cheap acrylic craft paints.

Put the canvas on the ground (or in your cardboard box base) and hold one of the paint containers at least eight feet above it. Squeeze the container and let the paint splat onto the canvas. When you’re satisfied, grab another color. I had one piece I wasn’t completely happy with and I pressed a blank piece of paper over it to make a monoprint, moving the paint around a bit.

It is really a fun technique, especially if kids are involved!
