Using Fixatives Safely

by Katelyn on February 27th, 2007

Yesterday, I talked about making an ornament that I sprayed with fixative. Now, I don’t know how you use them, but I take them out on the open front porch, drop whatever I’m spraying on the floor and stand back as far as I can before I spray the fixative. If there’s wind, I don’t use it. Then, I leave the artwork for about an hour before I bring it back inside. I even do this in the middle of January. Breathing in that stuff can be dangerous.

If you don’t apply fixative outdoors, you should at least throw open the windows and use a face mask. Bathrooms are great for this if there’s a window, because you can flip on the fan, too.
