Stamping Mad

What You Need to Make Cards with Rubberstamps

by Katelyn on October 5th, 2006

When you walk into a store that caters to stampers for the first time, you will probably feel overwhelmed. There are so many stamps, supplies and little gadgets that you could spend a fortune on stamping. However, to make some very nice cards, you don’t need to spend much at all.

You will need a few rubberstamps. If you don’t want to buy words and can do nice calligraphy or want to create your saying on the computer, you certainly can save some money there, but I tend to buy a lot of cute little sayings I just couldn’t resist. For Christmas, I recommend a nice sized snowman stamp, a santa stamp, a nativity type stamp, a Poinsetta stamp, a Christmas or holiday greeting (Season’s Greetings works well for me.) and a thank you stamp.

You will also need an inkpad or markers. If you are doing this project with children, you will probably want the Pigment based ink pads, since they will wash off easily, but I recommend Dye based pads for most projects. Buy a good black pad, preferably the Memories brand. You also may want a rainbow or gold pad for creating colored images very quickly and easily. If you have markers, you can color the stamp instead of inking it with an ink pad.

Embossing is one of the most exciting techniques for beginning stampers. I would buy a clear and a gold embossing powder to start. An embossing gun is a little expensive, but I recommend buying one. I started doing embossing by using the heat of a light bulb, but it is not safe and melts the powder too much.

Papers come in an overwhelming variety of colors and textures and it is easy to end up with a paper collection larger than your stamp collection. However, if you are creative, you will not need to buy much in the way of paper. Most craft stores sell scored cardstock in bulk. It is a little on the flimsy side, but you can purchase 50 card blanks with envelopes for a few dollars. If you want a very heavy paper for your final product, you can purchase sheets of paper in the weight you want and score them yourself. You also will want to buy some layering papers. Check the memory book section of your local craft store for a variety of patterned papers. I like to use handmade papers and mulberry papers because they make the cards look more professional, but many people make beautiful cards from the memory book papers. Also, check your junk mail envelopes for patterned paper.

I hate to use glue sticks, so I bought a Xyron, which is a really neat adhesive paper and laminating machine. However, the glue sticks work just fine and I wouldn’t buy a Xyron without deciding I loved stamping.

You’ll probably decide you want to buy more items as you stamp, but the list above will get you started. And you may find quite a few embellishments, like odd buttons and jewelry, around your house.
